ASU seeks to promote progressive change through education and activism on campus as well as in the community by focusing on the academic, cultural and political needs of all students of African descent. ASU's Academic Supports Program (see "STUDENT RETENTION CENTER") also provides academic support.

The center conducts and sponsors research on the African American experience, provides support to the African American Studies BA and MA programs, publishes monographs and research results, administers two undergraduate scholarships, sponsors community service programming, and maintains a noncirculating library.

The center is the foremost center for African Studies in the western United States. It maintains active relationships with several major universities in Africa, and participates in the Education Abroad Program for UC students. Outreach activities include public lectures, performances and exhibits in the community by the center’s faculty and students and an annual summer teachers’ institute.
