The Academic Advancement Program (AAP) is a multi-racial, multi-cultural program which represents the best of what U.S. society aspires to: access, equity, opportunity, and excellence. AAP has a threefold mission: to insure the academic success and graduation of its 5,500 students; to increase the numbers of these students entering graduate and professional schools; and to develop the academic, political, scientific, economic, and community leadership necessary to transform our society in the twenty-first century.

AAP TUTORING SERVICES

AAP tutoring is free to all AAP students in more than 450 courses. Tutoring is done primarily by AAP undergraduates in small groups.

AAP counselors encourage students to explore their talents and abilities and to aspire to academic and personal excellence. AAP counselors work with students to plan their academic programs; they monitor students’ progress toward the bachelor’s degree, provide information about requirements and prerequisites for different majors, and discuss graduate school and career options.
AAP peer counselors are upper division AAP students who assist entering students in making the transition to the university. They provide a student’s perspective on life at UCLA.

PLUS is a federally-funded component of AAP which provides intensive personalized services, including counseling, tutoring, workshops, and social and cultural programs for first-generation college, low-income, first-year students.

Graduate student mentors help AAP students prepare for graduate and professional school. The primary goal of GMP is to increase the number of AAP students who enroll in graduate and professional schools.

AAP McNair Research Scholars Program’s goals are to prepare undergraduates to get into the best graduate programs in the country and to help these students to excel in graduate school on the way to earning a Ph.D. in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
